Re: Smooth Joint for Bone Pairs

The videos I've seen on this topic simply ignore the lower bone (i.e., the 'hand') and never demonstrate the bone's affect (or lack of affect) on the lower part of the limb. I'm beginning to think this only allows the pair to be active for the whole layer, and I'm supposed to chop off the hand and p...

Smooth Joint for Bone Pairs

There's something I'm not quite understanding about this tool and I'm hoping somebody here can help. Let's say I have a bitmap layer of an arm and I want to rig it using three bones. I can use Create Smooth Joint to smooth out the elbow but once I do that, it seems I can no longer get the descending...

Re: Best books on screenwriting for animation?

Taking audio notes is good! Taking notes in any form can be very useful. I actually go 'low tech' for my notes. I like to keep a small notepad in my pocket to scribble notes in. These notes are usually just fragments of ideas and small doodles that often go nowhere but sometimes they wind up becomin...

Re: Our little cat and frog short

That's pretty funny. Thanks for sharing it. I assumed this was an interpretation of existing unscripted audio? It reminded me of the Creature Comfort shorts, or the Hubley's Cockaboodie. That's always fun because I'm also trying to imagine the actual situation when the audio was recorded. In this ca...

Re: Background layer not showing on PSD import into AS10

Yeah, Adobe needs to just fix that. I use Photoshop at work almost daily, and a day doesn't go by where I don't have to double-click that bottom layer to convert it into a normal layer. I think it's a holdover from days when available RAM was a bigger issue, though I can't imagine this really saves ...

That's incredible!

As always, your skill and creativity with ASP is inspiring. Please keep pushing that envelope, my friend! :)

Re: how many points to use

The best way to learn how to optimize a shape for bones is to simply play with ASP and see what works best for you and your characters. When you get down to it, there's no hard fast rule--it depends on the character, how you rig it, and how you want the 'bends' to look when it's being deformed. It c...

Re: Best books on screenwriting for animation?

Preproduction is my favorite part of working on animation. I've read a couple of books on the topic but in my experience, nothing beats just doing it. My personal writing/storyboard experience is mainly in shorts and commercials but the basic principles are the same for longer format productions. He...

Re: Freehand Character Problem

I have used characters in the PNG format that do not do well in animation mainly because the body parts cannot be separated easily, therefore the bones application is questionable. I don't quite understand what you mean by that. If you're importing the character as a single bitmap image, you can ri...

Re: Freehand Character Problem

Yes, just for clarification, I'm using .png for ASP. I typically use .exr in other programs I use in production, but they're both bitmap formats, as are any format that uses pixels to describe an image. What you're thinking of is .bmp, which is yet another bitmap format. It's not really Windows spec...

Re: Freehand Character Problem

While I would encourage you to learn how to adapt to drawing/constructing with the native tools, you should know that AS handles imported bitmap images surprisingly well, so you can draw in another program you may already be comfortable with and rig the images for deformation in AS. The advantage is...

Re: Is it possible to play projects in dvd player?

If you wish, you can write out an .mp4 directly from Anime Studio. Just got to Export Animation and choose MP4. Most modern DVD players are able to play a 'standalone' video file on disc, assuming you're using a codec compatible with the player. You'll need to check the specs of the DVD player for w...
