How Do I Setup up a Networking Environment with Anime Studio

I want to use Anime Studio in a team environment. How can I share files from Anime studio in a centralized fashion? I was thinking of signing up for Dropbox business version and using dropbox as a drive and creating new assets there so that all working on a project will have automatically updated files, instead of having to keep emailing files.

Would that work?
Is there a better way?

Which system to recommend depends on a lot of factors.

Do you only have to manage AS files, or other stuff as well (images, textures, video, sound)? Once I worked on a series where I had to copy 11 GB of library stuff onto my machine because all scenes used it - lots of image textures and stuff. Impossible to do this over a network. We only exchanged AS files.

Dropbox only works in very small teams with only a few files. Every time someone changes a file, the update will be run on all connected machines if you use shared folders. This slows down each machine. Don't do this. Keep animating and file transfer separate from each other.

How would you do version control if you use Dropbox? I've seen quite a lot of systems used for this, but in the end nothing is more reliable than naming your files corrcetly and number them. So an AS scene will be started as 15-0, then maybe assigned to animator XY and called 15_xy_1, then each new version will get a new number, 15_xy_2, 15_xy_3 and so on. If the scene changes hands, file name reflects it: 15_xy_5, 15_rs_16, 15_yx_17.

Usually AS scenes are small enough to be mailed. It's a good idea to set up an FTP server for library assets. People who don't create these can only read (and copy) stuff, creators can upload there.

Some time in the past I used Source Safe:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-US/library ... s.80).aspx
It's supposed to be good for version control, which makes collaborative work less hassle. I hated it, but I have to admit it worked...

Great points, great questions. I wanted to be able to make sure the latest file was available to every one, but the version control factor is extremely important.

Are you in the same space? Use an extra computer as a server.

Working from different locations? Use dropbox. (Dropbox has great version control, I've NEVER lost anything, even when idiots delete or overwrite important files)
