Scale compensation

I read and experience different things and so i'd like to get the final word on Scale compensation.

My current practice is to turn it off layers except for the very top group below which i have no z axis distribution. And that setting will apply compensation to all its children.

Is it a good way to go or can I just check "scale compensation for new layers" in the prefs and never worry about it (cause I remember that brought some issues).
