Isolate a video image to put into an animation

The idea is to take video of my nephew and put only his face into a cartoon. His face will be video on a giant spider monster's body. I am pretty sure this would be an easy thing to do, I just don't know how to do it. I have gimp, I usually isolate still images with that but don't really know how to isolate moving video images.
Thanks in advance

In Moho, you might be able to use video tracking to track a layer to mask the face. And then you could use point animation to refine the mask shape.

The "by the book" approach for this would be for your nephew to wear a green onesie and stand / act in front of a green screen (e.g. https://www.bristolvfx.com/body-suits) then chromakey out the green in your video editor.

Since only his face is needed, a large green poncho or just a blanket with a hole for the head will do.
