Why only 9 phonememes? How do I unlock more?

Post by kujina »

I tried Papagayo tonight and it is a nice simple piece of software.
BUT why only 9 phonemes, its a bit limited?
Papagayo uses the Carnegie Mellon Pronouncing Dictionary, correct?
On the CMU Pronouncing Dictionary website its states "The current phoneme set has 39 phonemes, not counting varia for lexical stress."

I would really appreciate a way to use more phonemes.

Hello Kujina,

Papagayo uses the CMU dictionary internally for English - however, it isn't permanently bound to this dictionary - for example, it would take very little modification to change it to internally use Grady Ward's Moby dictionary instead, which uses a completely different set of phonemes.

From the user's point of view it only uses the 9 Preston Blair phonemes.

To use more phonemes you need to modify the source. I've made one such modification which comes with a hidden feature of being able to use more phonemes (see thread for details).

nassosy has been working on another extended version of Papagayo - I don't think it has increased phoneme support, but you could request it.

Regards, Myles.
