Animated Music Video

Post by kwamster »

Hi

British electro-pop artist K.W would like to hire an animator to produce a dark and gritty anime styled music video from his current EP 'Galaxy'

Would be interested in collaborating more than once with the chosen artist to establish a brand image should the produced video be exactly as wanted.

Character designs all available.

Please reply here with any show-reel links if possible

Please check any of the links below to get a feel for his sound:

Kindest regards.

So we're talking about a 3 min video here? That would be a budget of about 9.000.- €, could be more if certain designs/ styles are required.

Is there a deadline for this project? Can you already show the character designs? Is there a story or a storyboard to follow, or is the director completely free to do whatever he wants?

Please see website link below, there's a showreel as well.

Hi

We have been given a tentative deadline of August 2012. If more time is indicated to be needed then the deadline can be extended. There is a story to follow yes but the director is allowed free range to interpret that story visually in the way they see fit. Sample character designs are below:

Having viewed your showreel your style indeed is very interesting but we are looking for a more Japanese anime influenced animator/director or a 3D animator with a dark gritty style or can produce this. However I will pass this on to management.

Many thanks for your reply.

Sincere apologies about the largness of the designs...I had no idea they would be posted so large.

The song that would have an animated music video is called 'K-leidoscopic' and can be heard at any of the following links:

Don't be fooled by the reel - we can do any style and tonality ...

If you're looking for a quite realistic character design, especially if he needs to move naturally, maybe in dancing or fighting, then you quite likely need to quadruple the budget I've given. Remember this is a forum for a dedicated 2D software, so if you're looking specifically for 3D characters this isn't the right place.

The 2 smaller designs are much easier to handle: it could be done in a kind of mocked 80's animation style. They're not looking much "Japanese", but we could easily include certain tropes of japanese animation in there, like certain lighting effects, and that peculiar style of breaking out in motion, then standing still for quite some time, and so on.

The more complex movement you want to include, the more expensive it gets. Do you want him to dance? Is lip sync required? I've seen the choreography training videos: to include this kind of dancing in animation you either need motion capture, or rotoscoping, and the result may still not meet your expectations. I'd advise to not include it at all, hopefully your story doesn't ask for it ...

The story: I really like to learn more about it, to see wether it's a good idea to do it in 2D animation. I've seen some nice examples of "gritty" stuff done in 2D, so there's a chance to produce something really good. (You could send the story by email (see below) if you feel uncomfortable about posting it here, I'll keep it confidential.)

3 months is quite a short time to do this, but it's doable. Just don't expect the same quality as feature length anime - that's not possible.

Thank you so much for your response!

The breakdown you gave made things a little clearer.

The idea of the mocked 80s animation style with the lighting effects sounds pretty interesting. Do you have any examples of this? I keep thinking of the old 90s X-Men animated television series.

In terms of the story for the video I will e-mail it to you as you suggested.

The deadline is not concrete thus it can always be extended depending on the suggested magnitude.

In terms of the budget, we are willing to consider any budget required. However, being an independent label, this has to be taken into consideration.

Hope this helps to make it a little clearer. Thanks again for your reply.

There was a nice parody of 80's style recently here: http://www.cartoonbrew.com/student/the- ... lions.html - of course this was 3D, which I don't do. Then there's http://www.cartoonbrew.com/music-videos ... scott.html this little gem which shows how nice stylized abstraction can work.

Simplyfying the designs would be a good way to cut expenses, and a more stylized video will always stand out, so I think it's a good idea to consider this as well. Think "Powerpuff Girls", but dark and sinister and, of course, male ...

I will put further discussion to email now, thx for the story.
