Advanced Special Effects?

So… I want to make my animations really pop with a professional level of quality. I'm not deluded into thinking that throwing Michael Bay-esque special effects will make up for crappy animation, but I do think that it could help to have better effects in my toolbox. I want to use Anime Studio for all of the core 2D animation work, but might potentially apply SFX from other programs and composite them in Final Cut.
Here's my question: For effects like blood splatters, weather, fire, slow motion, muzzle flash, lighting, shadows, shading, etc., are there programs that do a better or easier job than Anime Studio, such as After Effects?
I've approximated most of these effects in AS before, but if there's an alternate solution, I'm open to ideas! What do you all do?
