I am back!

Post by GCharb »

Hello everyone, my name is Gilles Charbonneau, I am a veteran Moho user, I was away for a time because of work, but I am back using Moho, you can visit my Moho/Anime Studio Youtube channel at this address

I upgraded my copy of Camtasia and I will start making tutorials soon and I plan on working on a short using Moho and Blender 3D, see you soon!

I am very glad to have you back! I'm getting into Blender, very impress with the archimesh plugin for interior building scene in architecture. Looking forward to more tutorial on mixing 3d and 2d, which is badly needed around here!

Hi Giles,

Good to see you back!

Coincidentally, I recently re-read the intro to lua scripting for Moho from your blog posts from way back. I'm finally taking the plunge into scripting for Moho because I want to convert some scripts I wrote for After Effects, and your lessons made switching languages a little less intimidating for me.

Anyway, looking forward to seeing new stuff from you.

Welcome back!
I still remember a few of your tutorials, including the one about masking!

Hello Rusc, wassup?
Yeah, Blender is pretty neat for 2D stuff, I posted a test on my Youtube channel, a definite asset for 2D animation.

I made two Lua tutorials, they were pretty much the first at the time, in-depth too, no idea how they hold-up to the new API though, maybe they need an update! :)

Masking was a dark secret for a long time, glad you found my tutorial useful! :)

I'm still mostly a beginner so your lessons were/are perfect for me. For now, I'm just poking around with short bits of code and figuring out by trial and error how they work and what I can do with Lua. That's pretty much how I learned to write a couple of useful tools for AE with Java/ExtendScript, but I keep hoping somebody will make a Lua for Moho series that gradually introduces more advanced concepts and techniques.

Scripting, especially in Lua, isn't very popular among animators, there is a couple of resources these days though...

Actually, over the years I've worked with quite a few animators who could script. (My wife for example.) But, you're right, not so much specifically for Lua and Moho. Maybe it's because there isn't a lot of good, structured learning material for it? Well, that's my 'excuse' anyway. :)

When I came to DreamWorks nearly four years ago, there was a short lull in my workload, and my boss here asked me if I wanted to try building a tool for AE. I had found an excellent video series on scripting for AE with JavaScript that got me up and running in about a week. It also helped that I work with guys who know this stuff well and can answer questions, but it was the video lessons that got me started, and gave me just enough knowledge so I knew what questions to ask.

Here's the AE tutorials I followed back then: After Effects ExtendScript Training Complete Series. If a knowledgeable Moho/Lua scripter created a series like this, that would be excellent and it might inspire more Moho animators to climb aboard the scripting wagon.

(Sigh! Back when I worked in The Box at Rhythm & Hues, my boss and some of the animators and programmers I worked with could write tools in Lua for Fusion, the compositing program we used in our department. Those tools were super useful and now I wish I paid more attention to how they were doing that back then.)

At work we use Python, definitely the most used scripting language in the animation world, Lua, not so much!

Which I also started learning at work few weeks ago. I must be a glutton for punishment. :)

My supervisor requested that the Moho devs add Python support when they visited last summer. As you said, Python is pretty much what every other program supports. It didn't sound like there were any immediate plans to add it to Moho but at least it's on their radar.

A large part of Moho is in Lua, so it makes sense that it supports it, as for Python, I doubt it will ever see the light of day in Moho, but I may be wrong about this!
