Super fast playback bug

Post by Jkoseattle »

This happens to me constantly, and wondering if it's a known bug or if there's something I'm doing to cause it.

It's very simple: Playback (video only) plays at about double speed often. I just stop and restart playback and then it usually plays back normally. Sometimes it plays back double speed a couple times in a row, but simply stopping and restarting eventually gets it to behave normally. Anyone know anything about this? It's intermittent, but I'd say 20% of the time it happens.

I haven't seen that issue here but, just wondering, does it behave differently when you change the Allow Frame Skipping option?

Since I know nothing about your project, I'm just shooting in the dark here, but here goes: Does it do this with any project or just a particular one?

If it's the latter, maybe there's an imported asset that Moho is having trouble caching for playback? For example, maybe there's a corrupted file or a video with a codec that's not fully Moho friendly. In which case, I would try saving versions of the scene with different assets removed to see if the performance improves. When a problem file is found, fix the asset and replace the bad one. (I generally avoid importing video files; for a variety of technical reasons, it's better to import image sequences in most animation and compositing programs.)

I'm assuming you tried closing Moho and restarting it. Here are some other general suggestions:

Is your video driver up to date?

Do you have other processes running in the background? If so, try closing them.

Sometimes closing other programs isn't enough and you'll need to reboot the computer. I tend to reboot several times during the week to minimize memory issues. If there's a stubborn issue, shut down completely, wait several seconds, and then start.

Hope you get this figured out.

If you're using physics, you probably need to bake them.

I've experienced the same issue (not using any physics). But Greenlaw might be on to something. I haven't noticed it happening since updating my GPU drivers. Honestly, it didn't really bother me when it would happen as it would only playthrough super fast once and then correct itself during the next loop. It was almost as if it was pre-rendering (similar to AE quickly rendering a work area and then playing through normally once complete).

Does it happen after a preview render?

You're talking about going to File/Preview Animation? No, I don't really use that function.

It happens to me fairly often, just when playing the timeline. Kind of annoying but also impressive that it can play it not only in real-time but double speed. Haven't tried playing around with settings to fix it.

Thanks for all the suggestions everyone. A few clarifications:

This happens on any project of any level of complexity. In fact, since my projects usually take a few weeks to finish, I could claim that at some time or other it happens on EVERY project. Just a simple SPACEBAR tap will cause it, no rendering or anything is necessary. Video driver is up to date. And I am using GPU.

Just to be sure I have all the info:

Which version of Moho are you using? Or does it do this in any version?

12.5 Build 22438 (64-bit), which is the only version I've been on in a long time

Hmm...yeah, I've been using 12.5 forever myself but not seeing this behavior. Weird.

If I think of anything else to try, will let you know.

Same version here and I can concur that I have experienced this on every project I've done in Moho. For what it's worth.

Not enough info to determine the cause, or steps to reproduce, but since I know physics causes fast playback, you might try disabling frame skipping and see if it still occurs (as that stops it for physics).

Wow! Disabling Frame Skipping really mucked it up. Lots of hangs and audio problems right away. That's not it!

Also, for the sake of completeness, oftentimes the double speed playback does not happen when I first hit Play, but a second or two after. So it plays normal for about a second, then suddenly speeds up. And sometimes it just starts right up at double speed.
