To make subtitles that are easy to work with I've created a long document with all the subtitles for the scene, saved as an image, and I simply scroll it up using Step interpolation, with an invisible mask to cover titles that have already appeared. This way all my subtitles are in a single manageable layer, and making a change is simple. The mask has to cover the entire screen (above where the title is seen of course) and it is out of necessity the top layer in the movie the whole time because it has to cover subtitles which always need to appear on top of everything else.
My problem is that this makes it impossible for me to use Alt-Right click to select visible layers, because almost no matter where I click on screen, what gets selected is this subtitle mask.
Is there a way to make a layer sit at the top of the layer order but NOT be clickable with Alt-right click?

Re: Unclickable layer
Not sure if this helps but here's a tool Synthsin75 wrote that let's me select through 'invisible' layers that normally intercept my clicks:

Another way to approach it is to use his Layer Shortcuts script to make a button or shortcut to select the layer you want.

Hope this helps.
