Screen Recording software for Mac?

A place to discuss non-Moho software for use in animation. Video editors, audio editors, 3D modelers, etc.

Screen Recording software for Mac?

Post by Mikdog » Fri Feb 04, 2011 12:09 pm

Hi,

Anybody know any reasonably priced or free software for Mac that'll allow me to record my screen as I work for tutorials? I've used Screenflow which is great but a little pricey. I understand Jing is free but apparently not that great.

Can anyone please make any suggestions? I also understand I could use Quicktime's recorder but I'd need Snow Leopard for that and I'm still on ordinary Leopard.

Thanks,

Mike

Have you checked out iShowU yet? It's reasonably priced and you can download a demo.

I've used Voila. Nothing super advanced but does what I need it for, and works on Leopard too. Smith Micro sells it for $30

I'd like to start this old thread again  maybe it's helpful to others.
I once used quicktime player to record screen on mac, but i can't choose to record system audio or microphone audio. Now i'm using Joyoshare Screen Recorder for mac. My friend recommended it to me. Works well so far.

I've been using Movavi for a while. It has many similar features to Camtasia, including a basic video editor, and it's a whole lot cheaper (about $60.) I've only used the Win version but they offer a Mac version too.

Movavi worked super well for me on my desktop and tablet computer, but I recently got a new laptop and last weekend I noticed UI issues with Movavi on this computer. I probably just need to change the high-density screen setting in the program properties but haven't tried that yet. (I've had to do that for many programs on this computer, including Moho 12.) That or I need to update Movavi to the latest version. I'll return with followup info when I've had a chance to investigate this on the laptop.

In any case, the issue may or may not be present in the Mac version. I think they have a free trial you can download so you can check it out for yourself.

Apart from that UI problem on my new computer, I really like Movavi and recommend it.

Oh, yeah, this is a pretty old one isn't it?

Anyway, maybe somebody will find my post helpful? :)

FYI, I took a quick look at my Movavi problem on my laptop during my lunch break and couldn't solve the issue with program properties. Will take another look tonight.

Quick followup: I tried getting Movavi to work on my new computer but not having any luck. Tried installing the latest trial for version 10 this weekend to see if that fixed anything but seeing similar issues. (My current licensed copy is version 8.) My guess is that the software isn't fully compatible with high-density screens. From what I'm reading, this might be an OpenGL issue too. Investigating that now.

FYI, Movavi still runs fine on my computer with the 1920 x 1080 screen. The 'problem' computer has a 4k screen.

As mentioned, there is a free 7-day trial version so be sure to test Movavi with on your gear before purchasing.

I'll follow up again if I ever figure out why it's not working well on my new computer. For now, I'm switching back to my old Camtasia program.

Played with this during my lunch break and think I figured it out: Movavi is apparently not compatible with Windows Scaling in Window 10. When I disabled this in the program properties, the software worked correctly. Unfortunately, the UI is now too tiny for me on this screen. Ugh.

So, IMO, this software is a great value but only if you have a 1920 x 1080 screen. (I'm going to write to the developer and see if they have a suggestion for using the software on a high-density screen or if they plan to fix this.)

That's all for now. :)
