Kaleidoscope Effect

Post by jezjones29 »

I've been playing with the new reference layer option to create a kaleidoscope effect. I've shared the file if you want to have a play.

Could come in handy for quick backgrounds.

this may not be how jezjones did it or even the greatest idea, but this will work in ASP11:

set the drawing options to be peaked points, and no line / no fill
draw a regular hexagon (but any even numbered polygon should work)
make sure there's horizontal line at the top (**not** an apex) [if you use my shape tool this is the default]
position the hexagon to be centred at 0,0 (select all points, select the point move tool and if necessary key in the coordinates)
draw a vector connecting the top left apex and (as above) position the loose end at 0,0
draw a vector from the 0,0 point to the top right apex to make a triangle
(check that you have a peaked point!)
fill the triangle

import your image

set up a group
Group: masking - hide all
image - mask this layer
polygon - add to mask keep invisible

make 5 copies by reference of that group (**not** duplicate layer)

use layer rotate to turn each copy group through 60, 120, 180, 240, 300 respectively
flip horizontally the 60,180,300 group

in the baseline group (i.e. not a copy) animate (move / rotate / whatever) the image layer.

because it's copy by reference all the "cloned" image layers will inherit the motion

sit back and enjoy the show!

Nice!
AS10 (maybe 9.5) had a two steps script for Tiling. First you it created the original tile, so you created the animated content inside (or import it as an image) and then you run the second script to multiply that tile to cover all the output.
In AS11 the script stills there, but instead of duplicating the layer, it create references from it, so you can animate the whole content at once.
The result is not exactly the same than yours, but is very similar for anyone who wants to play quickly :)

Nice! Great idea Jezz! Combined with the sound scripts could be cool too.

It looked good, but that sort of New Age music stole the show!

I've managed to create a new tutorial to show how I created the kaleidoscope effect in Anime Studio:

I've also created a new video to go with it:
