Monkey Diver App

Post by DK »

hi.
Just want to share the development of a new mobile/tablet game app we are working on.
It's called Monkey Diver!
Aim is to drag a monkey to the bottom of the sea to recover treasure while avoiding
Monkey Hungry sharks!
Here's a preliminary layout.
Cheers

Thanks for the feedback Greenlaw :) I will keep posting bits and pieces as it progresses.
Here's a gif of the trawler with a cycling flag.

UPDATE: Trawler has been updated to a barge as it now has the ability to move across screen both ways so you can go exploring other areas of the ocean. We decided it would look odd for a trawler to be reversing to the right of screen.

I fear your app promotes inter-species exploitation
You can't have everything. Where would you put it?

Maybe I should put bananas in the chest jahnocli? :D
Here's an underwater rock. There will be several versions of this placed on parallax scrolling layers for a depth effect.

If any one has any ideas/suggestions please feel free to chime in.

Some more items added. Treasure chests and gold coins to collect while you are diving.

We have also introduced a Parallax effect to the reef layers so they move as you descend into the depths of the ocean. It does look really cool and will post pics as we progress. Moho is a brilliant tool when it comes to making game graphics.

EDIT:
Here's a 10 frame Bubbles cycle jahnolci.

I had to post a small version here as the original is 1024 pixels high (The height of the largest res device we build for)

I like it! -- but maybe it needs a little randomness?
Like this:
Image
This is an old procedural Flash file, so essentially this randomness goes on forever. Just like life.

This actionscript is just in an endless loop. Maybe you could get a coder to come up with a Moho version (or a version for your app, which is more likely)?

Hey thanks jahnocli!!!!
Will send the shot to our coder to look at for sure. Too many image sequences can bump up the size of the final app and I know he much prefers coding in animation where he can.

UPDATE: Our coder says he thinks this is an emitter and not the whole script but he is going to write one in.
Many thanks for the help!

Here's a 3D type rendering of the monkey for an in game splash screen. Moho is just so versatile when you really dig into some of the layer shadow rendering techniques. You can achieve a really believable 3D look quite easily.

I think the trawler looks and reads better than the symmetrical barge. And I'd just flip it (centered in the trawling line) when changing directions.

Hi Wes.
Thanks for the feedback. I was also in 2 minds about the trawler too. I will pass on your feedback to our coder with my reservations as well.

First working screenshot. Looks pretty close to the original concept art. The mechanics of the game are fairly straight forward. You drag your finger downwards any where on the screen to lower the monkey onto a treasure whilst being circled by menacing hungry sharks. The weight of the gold in the bag means he can't ascend as quickly. Trying to do so results in the monkey dropping gold coins. Pretty scary when there are 8 sharks on screen. The Parallax effect on the reef layers give you the feeling that you are going down deep. It's a really fun game to play. A lot more work to do yet though!!!
