How to use Reference Layers in fun, tricky ways (video)

Post by PaperWaspNest »

Hey everyone -

Here's a video tutorial I made that goes over some of the ways I use reference layers to keep complicated rigs easy to control.
Main topics include: How to control a mask + masked object all from the same layer, and how to combine reference layers with Hide Edge for interesting effects.

Let me know if it helps, or what else you'd like to see!

Nice layer layout. I might go one further and put all of the folders in one group, for all the non-control layers.

Have a question about bones and reference layers? do you put the origial in a bone layer for it to affect the reference level. or is it done another way?

Saturn and rings really a clever use of the reference,

Thanks

I'm glad it was useful for people! :)

KeeCoyote: I do put the original AND the references in a bone layer, since I want both to be affected by the bone movement. I haven't noticed any issues with putting both in a bone layer. Once you have the original layer's vector points bound to the bone, the reference should follow it as well.

Very nice clear instruction! Thanks for the tutorial, it's really smart to simplify animation to a single vector control layer :)
