Dial Bone AND normal bone

Post by Diana Kennedy »

I'd like to know if there is a way top control a group of layers with a Dial AND an normal bone.
As an example : I make a head. A dial bone controls the mouth (to talk) but when I ad a second, a normal bone in order to move the head, either the dial bone doesn't work properly anymore, either the normal bone doesn't. In short : its a mess. I am pretty sure that it can be done but I'm doing something wrong. But what?

I'm guessing you're using the regular bone to layer-bind the head group/bone layer. Layer-binding stops smart bones (dials) from reaching any layer inside the bound group/bone layer. This means that you'll need to release all the intervening group layers and bind all the sublayers to the normal bone (thanks to nested layer control, which should be enabled by default).

If it continues to give you trouble, you can PM me a file and I can show you what it looks like.

Okay, here's what you have:

Head bone layer with regular bone to control the head
- Kopf bone layer with smart bone to control the mouth
- - vector layer art
- - vector layer art
- - etc..

It's the smart bone in the Kopf layer that is keeping the regular head bone from reaching the layers nested in the Kopf layer. To fix this, you'll want to:

1. Copy and paste the "talk" smart bone from the Kopf layer to the Head layer.
2. Select all the Kopf sublayers and drag them into the Head layer.
3. Delete the Kopf layer.

In fact, so that there are 2 bones in the same bone layer, one smart dial and the other normal?
I tried this once but it resluted in the entire head moving around when I actioned the dial bone and in weird movements when I actionned the normal bone.
Or did I get it wrong?

Yes.

If the regular bone was parented to the dial bone, it would move oddly and the dial bone would also move it. Make sure those bones are not parented together.

Also check to make sure the Bone Strength is Zero for the Smart/Dial bone.
