if you run tool again it goes one level up.
Explain more clearly if I do not understand what you mean

I wondered if it was possible to keep going up a chain until you hit a bone layer, regardless of how deep you already are (a sub folders child layer doesn't go up to the bone)

My main goal in this script was to go back to the main layer with one click when we go to the layers inside the rig and continue the animation or rig without worrying that the wrong layer will be selected.
but we can add a option for search more to find Rig layers outside of top layer.

Thank you! I started using it, I love to go back to the bone layer so easily and being able to press it again to go another level up is great but it automatically collapses the children of the bone layer. I'm not sure if that is intended, I usually prefer to have the layers visible for the same reason that I like this script, to be able to move quicker between layers.

Agreed, I prefer to keep the layer stack open too. I commented out the "Expand" code on lines 46,51 and 86. It works like a dream for me!
