6:1 ratio of non-animators versus animators on a film

Post by Hoptoad »

"About 300 people, including 40 animators, worked on the movie Klaus, which took over two years to make." (Quote found on the internet.)

If 40 of the 300 people who worked on the animated film Klaus were animators - that's about 6 other people on the payroll for every 1 animator.

6 to 1? Is that common nowadays for feature-length animated films?

Just massaged these numbers out of IMDB for Klaus

Within Animation Dept - they are roles such as Animator, Layout, Artist, CleanUp

The list you compiled shows 150 people in the animation department, plus another 35 in the art department. Now, those numbers make sense.

The quote I saw on the internet was waaay off!

Klaus was impressive. I was skeptical that only 40 people were responsible for all that beautiful animation.

Thanks for compiling the list. I no longer have Netflix, so I couldn't take a look at the credits. After your post, I went to IMDB; every person who worked on the film appears there. Nice!

Thanks. I think I see where that other person (or AI) made their counting error. They only counted the people listed under "ANIMATORS" as animators, and did not count the other specialized animators.
