Yes, you're right. Steps are:
Draw in frame 0 as usual.
At other frame morph your composition to the X or Y maximum positions. It can be different values for each point. It depends on what you want to achieve. For a drop effect you have to flatten the shapes (Scale tool).
Being at that frame, run the menu/tool script. It would store the points positions.
