Envelope distortion

It would be nice to have envelope distortion. Among other things it would be useful for applying squash and stretch to layers. You could make a squashed object bulge out in the middle.

can't you already achieve this by moving the points, or bones??

If you have a lot of points and a lot of shapes that's not practical. For example, if you have a hamburger and you want to squeeze it in the middle so it bulges out at both ends you would have to move all the points on the top bun, the bottom bun and the hamburger patty, then all the seeds on the top bun, and after all that it would probably look pretty bad when you were finished.

You can use bones to squash and stretch, but they don't give you much control over the shape.

Sounds to me kinda like what a lattice deformation would do to a 3D object. If you could assign a lattice to a shape, then you could manipulate it with the lattice.
