Walk Cycle Across Background

Character walk cycle no problem, what is a problem is making the character walk across a background. I have seen this many times in tutorials but somehow I am missing something. If I have a timeline of 144, at 144, I move the character to the end position of the background. It is not working well. Can anyone give me the process in writing so "ol" dumb me can follow it.
