How do you take care of your character shoulders?

Hey everyone!
I was wondering how do you take care of your human character shoulders? Me personally, I just use rounded nubs which can be seen here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PX5pLfq7HeI. Eventually I'll want to have them seamlessly connect to the body like in my banner (I don't use auto patches anymore because I use a switch or a group for 90% of my limbs). I know I could do it with smart bones but I want to stay away from smart bones as much as possible. I have my reasons, I use the transform bone a lot to give it the illusion that the character is rotating. There's a professional animator that uses Toonboom https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RGOxKeQHk00 that I follow for tips and tricks (I just implement them in moho) that has a pretty good way of doing it. I'm curious to see how some of you handle them.
