any use?
fire: https://youtu.be/bpEM4y_VGI8
lava (sort-of as it's meant to be hot coals): https://youtu.be/wly0Oz5DVQg

I'll go into detail if they're useful for you.

Elemental Magic 1 and 2 are books people always recommend for this.

As a possible companion to Elemental Magic 1 and 2 by Jospeh Gilland there is the

BiteyCastle Academy 2dFX Animation Course which is an extensive course, by Adam Phillips, on how to animate (hand drawn) all sorts of effects. The course can be downloaded for free.
https://chluaid.gumroad.com/l/bcafx

The course is comprised of 53 lessons. Fire is covered in the course, like in the 'Torch Flame' lesson. As for lava specifically, it's mentioned in the 'Viscosity' lesson. And maybe with a bit of the 'Boiling', 'Foaming' and 'Pooling' lessons it could be a start.

Here are some of the lessons:
  • Lightning Strikes and Bolts
  • Gravity Timing for Animation
  • Dust Impact and Dissipation
  • Torch Fire
  • Animated Reflections from a character
  • Swarm, Insects as particles
  • Magic Fire Spell
  • Destruction, Fracturing Solid Objects
  • Boiling, Liquid and Air
  • Foaming, Aerating Liquids
  • Ocean Surface
